Challenge

INDOT owned two software solutions (dTIMS and Esri Roads and Highways) that each operated independently from one another and were not in sync. It was common for the route network definition to be different in both systems and users to not be able to access the data that they needed when they needed it.

Solution

Deighton developed an Enterprise Integration Service that enabled the dTIMS business users to schedule periodic LRS updates from Esri's Roads and Highways. The goal was to create an authoritative LRS for both Roads and Highways and dTIMS, allowing all highway network changes to be done in a GIS environment that dTIMS consumes as needed.

dTIMS has the ability to seamlessly connect to an agency’s authoritative LRS and GIS system. This allows data to be synchronized between the two systems behind the scenes. This integration was a huge step forward from the ETL (export-transform-load) manual process of the past.

Now, one road has only one representation in both the GIS and dTIMS.

Results

  • Bi-directional integration utilizing Roads & Highways as an authoritative asset inventory.*
  • Automated procedures or batch updates on a regular basis (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly, or whatever makes sense) from dTIMS.*
  • The elimination of data duplication
