CDOT Begins Asset Management Journey
by Jeff Zavitski
Recently the Colorado Department of Transportation contracted with Deighton to develop a framework for implementing multiple assets within dTIMS CT. Interested in the work performed by Deighton for other high profile states such as Utah and North Dakota, CDOT sought the services of Deighton to meet with many different asset groups to see how their asset management practices could be included in an overall asset management system for Strategic Planning and for Cross Asset Trade-offs.
Jeff Zavitski from Deighton travelled to CDOT to meet with the various asset group teams to determine what data they have available and how they use that data in their respective management systems for planning and programming decisions. Traditional assets such as pavement asset and bridge assets were included in the discussions but non traditional assets such as fleet assets and ITS assets were included as well.
In July, Deighton will finalize the framework for CDOT with the completion of the Implementation Framework Report that will document how each asset could be implemented within dTIMS CT and the necessary resources from CDOT staff and outside consultants that would be necessary for the initial implementation and the enhancements to the analysis in the future. Once the report is complete CDOT will weigh the resources needed to implement the system against the tremendous benefits that the implementation will offer and decide how to proceed.
Recent Conferences & Meetings
by Arif Rafiq & Richard Fox-Ivey
Arif Rafiq recently exhibited at the First International Conference on Pavement Preservation in Newport Beach, California which ran from April 13th to April 15th 2010. In addition to highlighting Deighton’s presence at such a well attended event, Deighton was also involved in discussions with the National Center for Pavement Preservation.
As a voting committee member, Richard Fox-Ivey attended the Spring Meeting of ASTM E17 Committee on Vehicle-Pavement Systems Committee in State College, PA. Key representatives from both industry and State DOTs were in attendance for the meeting including: the FAA, Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, Virginia DOT and Florida DOT among others.
New standards of interest currently being developed include a standard for Automated Crack Data Analysis and one on the topic of creating a Unified Data Format for Storing and Retrieving Pavement Condition Data. The next committee meeting is scheduled for fall of 2010.
Deighton Rides for Heart
by Craig German
On June 6, 2010 the Deighton Bike Team participated in the 23rd Annual Ride for Heart.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation has been hosting this unique event to raise crucial funds and save lives. In all 13,000 riders participated. The Deighton team was comprised of Jonathan, Jayne, Melanie and Jeff Zavitski, Rob Piane, Donna Rafiq, Arif Rafiq, Chris Chau, Kristin Talbot and Craig German.
Although the day was rainy and cold it was an amazing time and all for a great cause. There is nothing like the feeling of riding the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway traffic-free, with the CN tower and the Toronto cityscape as a backdrop!
